Instead, it turned into an open event-based circuit format that culminates in an annual Rocket League World Championship. With that, the Rocket League Rival Series has discontinued.
RLCS Season 1 was Rocket League's biggest tournament at the time, and there was a lot of hype surrounding many of the teams. The first round would see an even split between NA and EU, with underdog team The Flying Dutchmen , who barely made it to the finals at all after Supersonic Avengers came close to stealing their spot, managed to upset the NA 1 seed Kings of Urban.
Meanwhile, iBP , who were playing with substitute 0ver Zer0 instead of star player Gambit , managed to overcome F3. NG were unable to recover and were beaten by a F3 team on a mission to power through the lower bracket and into the grand finals.
When they arrived, they faced iBP once again. Europe saw many of the same teams qualify once again, and with one single league play instead of the two qualifiers NG and F3 would take the top two spots amid some controversy surrounding the rules of tiebreakers and leave Mock-It , Precision Z , Red Eye and REUNITED who were the former Supersonic Avengers squad , to battle for the remaining two spots.
North America saw the world champions now under G2 Esports and with 0ver Zer0 as a starter struggle in league play, and they would eventually miss out on the playoffs altogether.
Genesis and Take 3 would take the two remaining LAN spots and would end up meeting again for the third-place playoff, where Genesis took the win while NRG beat Orbit to take first seed for North America once again.
The European teams would come out fighting as they took all four series' in the upper bracket, including an incredible reverse sweep from Mock-It against Orbit, who would then crash out of the tournament against Take 3.
Another victory for Mock-It over F3 meant that they had to play against Take 3 again, who they then dispatched with a sweep. In the Grand Finals, F3 managed to win back-to-back series' to take home the title of Season 2.
They would be joined by an all-new Mock-It squad, a Flipsid3 team who barely edged past an inconsistent Resonant Esports , the surprise team of The Leftovers and Northern Gaming , who were heading to LA with their sub Turbopolsa as Maestro was busy with exams.
As Alpha Sydney made history by winning their first series against Denial and NRG swept Northern Gaming to send them to the lower bracket, things started heating up as NG and The Leftovers began to make their lower bracket runs.
After this they moved on to face NRG in the lower bracket finals, in order to determine who would face Mock-It in the grand finals.
NG would take the series , leaving them with the task of getting the bracket reset against Mock-It, which happened once again as NG won two tight series' in order to become the world champions of Season 3.
Notable teams who dropped to the new second division included Fibeon eSports and The Leftovers , who were upset by Emotion soon-to-be Allegiance and Aeriality soon-to-be Team Secret respectively.
In North America , the passionate Ghost Gaming surprised everyone by qualifying for the World Championship, sweeping FlyQuest in the playoffs to secure their spot.
However, the bigger news was that - at long last - G2 Esports had finally qualified for LAN, with Kronovi making his first appearance his Season 1 victory.
However, after finishing second in league play G2 were heavily beaten by first Ghost and then NRG, and therefore went to Washington as 4th seed.
At the other end of the table, a disappointing Renegades side joined Allegiance in the bottom two. Renegades won both of their matches with relative ease, securing their spot in Season 5, while Allegiance was sent to the Rival Series, not by the Fibeon side who they had upset previously, but former world champion Lachinio 's Out of Style , who secured his return to the RLCS after two seasons away.
However, by far the biggest surprise was world champions Team Envy , having replaced Maestro with their former player gReazymeister , finishing in the bottom two, with their Week 5 victory over PSG who were looking to become the first-ever team to go only serving as a consolation.
In the Promotion Tournament, Envy ended up surviving, with Team Secret being replaced by the Fnatic ex-Leftovers side who they had knocked into the Rival Series while still playing as Aeriality.
In the upper bracket PSG and Method built on their strong seasons by defeating Cloud9 and NRG respectively, before Method took home a tight series to set up yet another big matchup with their rivals, Gale Force.
This series proved to be one to remember, with Method keeping themselves alive by winning a lengthy game 6 overtime before Gale Force took game 7 by a single goal.
Elsewhere, in the lower bracket, no teams managed to make a huge lower bracket run, with C9's three-match win streak being ended by Method in the lower bracket finals despite Squishy scoring an incredible ceiling shot , and G2 taking two series before falling to C9 and finishing 4th place.
This set up a rematch between Gale Force and Method, however, Method was beginning to show signs of fatigue, and Gale Force rolled over them in a sweep, making them World Champions and giving Turbopolsa the title of the first player to win RLCS twice, as well as the first player to win it back-to-back.
They ended up taking the fourth LAN spot by defeating Rogue in the playoffs, seeing Chrome make his World Championship debut despite having played in every single season of the RLCS up to that point.
Over at the other end of the table, Out of Style nearly broke Team Secret's unwanted record by going in games, and they were relegated along with fan favourites Counter Logic Gaming.
Gale Force eSports once again took home the first seed for EU, and they were joined at LAN by the offensive powerhouses of Renault Vitality and compLexity Gaming , all with unchanged rosters from the previous season.
Secret looked to have run out of steam as in the following series they were annihilated by Fnatic. After a long period of waiting, Psyonix eventually announced that the World Championship would be heading to the Copper Box Arena in London, to the excitement of many.

The two teams finishing at the bottom of the RLCS and the two teams finishing at the top of the RLRS for each region play each other in a promotion tournament at the end of the season to determine if teams are promoted or relegated.
At the advent of Season 5 in June , Psyonix organised and managed the event alone. Previous to this, they partnered with Twitch.
